WORK IN PROGRESS
Marian Gold (Alphaville Mailing List @ Yahoogroups):
”(…) Momentarily I am fully occupied with the production of the upcoming Alphaville album. We have almost finished with the complete arrangements of the first track and a couple of other songs are already in waiting for further touches before we go into serious recording. We are also planning jam sessions with the new material for next month. We hope this will turn the whole process into a less “theoretical” enterprise. Insight from this experience consequentially will be integrated into the final production and as a result we intend to create another brandnew and unprecedented version of the band and their music.
I am totally thrilled by these prospects and the music we have composed so far sounds reall, really beautiful. Maybe we will introduce you to some of the new songs on our upcoming concerts in summer.
Best wishes from cold and sunny Berlin under crystal blue skies
Marian Gold”
MARIAN GOLD ON “WAYS” (Crazyshow, 2003)
“Hey Mrs King, I wonder where you´ve been
You lived inside my dreams
The happiest Katie I have ever seen
Now you changed and turned into a bee
While I tuned into gee
It makes me feel like starting up anew, I meet you at the moon
Because I´ve finally found that the world is round…
And the snowflakes outside…”
…in the original lyrics it was “zoo” instead of “moon”.
Katie King is the name of a ghost who allegedly materialized during a séance
in London conducted by a certain Mrs. Florence Cook in 1871. Check out
Wikipedia, it holds all the details.
Mrs. Fields is a reference to the song “Strawberry Fields Forever” by John
Lennon. That’s why I installed a strawberry-cake in the next line.
Mrs. Grey is just a quite depressed me and the middle 8 part lyrics served
as some kind of self-encouragement at the time.
I started writing the lyrics some late November afternoon. It was snowing
outside and strong winds pushed the snowflakes around. Impossible to follow
a single one with one’s eye. Myriads of moves, complete entropy. It somehow
reminded me of the theory of parallel universes. I wondered that if there
existed an unlimited number of universes, each one representing a certain
probability of events, even the most nonsensical incidents could happen. It
was kinda fun to write these absurd verses and imagine them occuring in the
reality of another world, maybe even creating this reality exactly in the
moment of their invention. But then again, what actually is nonsense? If I’d
carry on explaining our song I could make complete sense of it. How boring.
I better stop here.
There’s so much left to do…
Come out t’ play, dear Prudence!

all across the planet, politicians tremble
continental sister’s rocking with the liquid gambler
now the time is here, now it’s coming true
the enigmatic extasy is overwhelming you
acrobats and comets are streaking by
40.000 sirens are wailing at the sky
innersexual circuits are cruising without fear
all inviting you for partytiming here”

Forever Young in Hamburg, Barmbek.
I just came across one of these nice things the internet blogging world has to offer: an article showing “Eleven Seminal Album Covers As Seen With Google Street View” - you’ll find it here.
That reminded me of something: The sculpture that looks at you from the cover of Alphaville’s debut album “Forever Young” can also be paid a visit by traveling with Google StreetView:

ALPHAVILLEs A VICTORY OF LOVE covered by STRAUSS EX MACHINA
For those who did not come across it yet - here’s a recommendation from Alphaville-Mastermind Marian Gold: STRAUSS EX MACHINAs cover version of the Alphaville classic “A Victory Of Love”. Fantastic stuff, listen to it (and make sure not to miss the other covers of Depeche Mode, Ultravox, Pet Shop Boys and Fad Gadget songs) for free and in full on

STRAUSS EX MACHINA about “A Victory Of Love”:
“If you never heard Alphaville around 1984, you were either deaf, dead, not born, locked up or ignorant to the brink of stupidity. Their debut ‘Forever Young’ is to this very day still one of the best pop albums known to mankind and I was completely hypnotized by it at the age of twelve. As with many other really great albums - especially from the eighties - the singles aren’t really the best songs… at least not in my personal experience. The opening track which I have violated here beats the three singles from the album by lightyears and I was reluctant to finish the first draft of it because I doubted my ability to sing it. To my great joy and surprise I managed to do it and I am very happy with the whole result.
I did not sing the choirs between 3.20-4.26 of course, they are artifical and made with a great little piece of software I tested for a while. The ending guitar solo of this version is put there for two reasons; first of all it sounds great and second it just might taunt the living crap out of the people who took part in the stupid quarrel between fans of synthetic pop and metalheads back in the eighties and still think guitars should be banned from the face of the earth. You are wrong, totally.”

You can be a giant and you can be a troubadour
For each and every sanity you will find a cure
Here’s the place to leave behind your earthly avatars
On my little moon of psychopaths…
So if you need a holiday far off from this world
You’ll be welcomed by my sirens’ songs and mysteries unfurled
Send out funny postcards from meadows full of stars
On my little moon of psychopaths…
[LMFP, 2/2 (M. GOLD)]
Sometimes you’re so sad and sometimes you’re so scared
And no one seems to know you and no one seems to care
I can hardly wait to see you comin’ past
On my little moon for psychopaths…
Nothing really matters and no one has a clue
A universe of questions that crumbles over you
Free your mind from sorrow and troubles’ aftermath
On my little moon for psychopaths…
